BRAVES PURCHASE BISENIUS FROM LINCOLN

DURHAM, NC – No more than a few hours before Joe Bisenius (pictured) was due to take the mound against the Sioux City Explorers at Haymarket Park, the Saltdogs right-hander received news that he would be going back to a major league organization for the first time since 2011. The Atlanta Braves purchased Bisenius’ contract on Monday afternoon and plan to send him to their Triple-A club in Gwinnett, GA.

Bisenius earned his shot with the Braves in his six starts with Lincoln this season. He has gone 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA. Even more impressive, the righty has struck out 43 batters in 37 innings and has walked only nine (4.78 K/BB). He has struck out at least nine in his last three starts and has hit the 10-strikeout mark twice.

The Oklahoma City University product has also given the Saltdogs distance nearly every time he has stepped on the mound. Bisenius has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last four starts. The most impressive of those starts was earlier this month against Sioux City. Pitching on the road, Bisenius went 8.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. He struck out 10 batters in the performance, as Lincoln won on the road, 4-2.

Prior to joining Lincoln, Bisenius had spent eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox organizations. Bisenius was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 21st round of the 2003 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Iowa Western Community College, but he opted to stay in college for one more year. The following year, after moving to Oklahoma City University, the Phillies took the right-hander in the 12th round. Bisenius pitched in the Phillies organization from 2004-2009, reaching the majors in 2007. He appeared in two games for Philadelphia, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing two hits.

After the 2009 season, Bisenius changed organizations. He joined the Nationals, pitching 4.2 innings with the major league club. He also spent some time with Washington’s High-A, Double-A and Triple-A clubs that year, before going to the White Sox organization in 2011. Bisenius went 6-1 between Double-A and Triple-A with the White Sox, then pitched for two different clubs in the Mexican League in 2012.

The Atlanta Braves recognized Bisenius’ quality performances with the Saltdogs, as well as his previous body of work, by purchasing his contract from Lincoln on Monday afternoon. Bisenius will join the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves this week.
