Tryout Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?

All participants must have played college baseball for two consecutive seasons within the past two years at a NJCAA, NCAA, or NAIA school.  If you have played professional baseball (affiliated or independent) within the last 2 years, you are eligible as well.  If you don’t fall within either of these two categories, you are NOT eligible. All registrations are screened, and you will NOT receive a refund if you do not meet the requirements of the tryout.

Do I have to pre-register on the website?

Yes, all participants must pre-register and fill out the player information form.

Where is the Tryout?

The American Association tryout camp is Thursday March 27 and Friday March 28 at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. (Home of the Fort Worth Cats). The American Association consists of ten teams: El Paso Diablos, Fort Worth Cats, Grand Prairie AirHogs, Lincoln Saltdogs, Pensacola Pelicans, St. Paul Saints, Shreveport Sports, Sioux City Explorers, Sioux Falls Canaries and Wichita Wingnuts.

Do I need to sign an Injury Waiver?

Yes, at check-in all players must sign an injury waiver in order to participate in the tryout.

*Rate is $95.00 for anyone who checks in under the American Association Tryout rate. All rooms need to be booked by February 15 for this rate.*

Will there be transportation to and from the field?

No transportation will be provided to and from the field.  You are responsible for making your own arrangements.

What time should I arrive?

Check-in begins at 7:30 A.M. at the main entrance gate at LaGrave Field.  Don't be late!

How long are the Tryouts?

The first day may go late into the evening with an anticipated finish of approximately 7:00 PM. Day one will focus primarily on fielding, throwing, speed and pitching with some game situation late in the day. Call backs will be posted and a smaller group will return the second day to participate in simulated games. At the conclusion of day two, a draft will be conducted and selected players may at that time be offered contracts.

Will contracts be offered at the Tryouts?

Yes, after the conclusion of the second day, the managers will draft selected players and contracts will be offered.

How long is the Season?

The 96-game season opens Wednesday, May 7 and ends on Saturday, August 23. Spring training will begin on Saturday, April 26 at your team's city.

Is this the only tryout?

Yes, the league only holds one tryout per year.

Who will evaluate the players?

Managers and field personnel from all teams will be represented to evaluate players.

Can you tryout for more than one position?

No, all players may only tryout in their primary position.

What equipment do I need to bring?

All players are required to wear baseball pants.  We will provide baseballs, helmets, and a few bats, but you are responsible for bringing everything you need to play.  No catcher's gear will be provided, so please bring your own.

How much money will you be paid?

Rookie minimum is $800/mo.  If you are a rookie, you should not expect to receive more than minimum.  In addition, all players are allotted $18/day meal money when on the road.  Some teams arrange for housing, but many do not.
