BERGIN WINS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Sioux Falls Canaries INF David Bergin (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending June 28.

Bergin went 11-for-21 (.524) in five games at the plate last week, collecting three doubles, three home runs and racking up six RBI.

The Tampa, Fla. resident began his week with a 2-for-5 game on Tuesday night at the Wichita Wingnuts. He added a double, an RBI and a run scored on the game, a 13-11 Wichita victory. Wichita would go on to sweep the two-game series, but Bergin’s bat truly came alive when the Canaries came back home on Thursday.

In the opening game of a three-game set with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Bergin was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. For the second time in a week, though, his Canaries scored double-digit runs and lost, falling 20-13. A night later, Bergin went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in a narrow 5-4 loss. He closed the week on Saturday night by logging a 4-for-5 night with a double, home run, RBI and run scored as Sioux Falls picked up an 11-3 win.

Now, the former Tennessee Wesleyan College player is hitting .348 (39-for-112) with nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 24 RBI.

This is Bergin’s first season with the Canaries after spending four years in the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies organizations. He reached as high as Class AA Tulsa in 2014 with Colorado.

The Canaries open a home series with Wichita tonight at 7:05 p.m. Central time at The Bircage, Sioux Falls Stadium.
