CANARIES SHUTOUT EXPLORERS TO SPLIT TWINBILL

July 30 Evening Recap

Sioux Falls 3, Sioux City 0 (Game 2 – 7 Innings) – Box

Sioux Falls starting pitcher Bo Hellquist and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Canaries downed Sioux City, 3-0 to gain a split in the doubleheader. Hellquist went the first five innings of the contest allowing only a walk and two hits to go with four strikeouts in a 58-pitch effort. The bullpen duo of James Jones and Jose Ortega each tossed a scoreless inning of relief and striking out a combined four batters. Hellquist earned his first victory while Ortega picked up his 14th save. Offensively for Sioux Falls, 2B Brett Marr and LF Ty Morrison both went 1-for-3 with a run scored. All three of the Canaries’ runs were scored in the fourth inning.

Gary SouthShore 10, Texas 1 – Box

The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play and never looked back en route to a 10-1 victory over Texas. Gary SouthShore pounded out 13 hits in the contest with five players having multi-hit games. RailCats C Wilfredo Gimenez and RF Colin Willis went a combined 6-for-8 at the plate with five runs scored and five RBI while LF Cameron Newell added two hits in four at-bats and scored three runs. Gary SouthShore starting pitcher Alex Gunn tossed a complete game to notch his sixth win of the season. Gunn gave up an earned run on six hits and struck out five batters in a 108-pitch game. For Texas in the losing effort, C Michael Miller scored the team’s only run with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Wichita 8, Salina 1 – Box

The Wichita Wingnuts earned their third straight victory as they defeated the Salina Stockade by a final of 8-1. Wichita jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after just an inning of play and cruised from there to their 41st win of the season. Wingnuts leadoff hitter Tyler Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI while 2B Christian Stringer added two runs and two RBI in a 2-for-4 night. Wichita 1B Matt Chavez also had a pair of hits in five at-bats and a run batted in. Wingnuts starting pitcher Alex Boshers threw a complete game in collecting his ninth win of the season. Boshers gave up an earned run on five hits to go along with a walk and six strikeouts.
