EXPLORERS TAKE TWO FROM SALTDOGS TO GRAB CENTRAL DIVISION LEAD

Sioux City 11, Lincoln 1 (Completion of Suspended Game from August 11) – Box

The Sioux City Explorers rolled out to an 8-0 lead after three innings of play and would never look back as they cruised to an 11-1 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs. Sioux City pounded out 14 hits in the contest with four hitters having multi-hit games. Explorers LF LeVon Washington and CF Tim Colwell had a combined six hits, including two doubles, five runs scored and two RBI. Sioux City 3B Tommy Mendonca added two hits in four-bats with two RBI while SS Nate Samson plated a pair of runs in a 1-for-5 night. Explorers starting pitcher Bryan Escanio tossed seven solid innings in earning his fourth win of the season. Escanio gave up an earned run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Sioux City 6, Lincoln 2 (Regularly scheduled game/7 Innings) – Box

Sioux City scored three runs in the seventh inning to break open a tight game and defeat the Lincoln Saltdogs by a 6-2 final. Explorers SS Nate Samson led the way offensively going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Sioux City LF Derrick Robinson collected three hits in four at-bats and plated a run while DH LeVon Washington drew two walks, scored a run and drove in one. Explorers pitcher Rob Wort picked up the victory and is now 4-3 on the season. Wort threw an inning of relief giving up two earned runs on four hits. As the result of the two victories by the Explorers Thursday, they are now ½ game ahead of Lincoln in the Central Division.

Kansas City 2, Laredo 0 – Box

Kansas City starting pitcher Jared Messer was sensational on the mound in leading the T-Bones to a 2-0 win over the Laredo Lemurs. Messer faced 32 batters in the contest and tossed a five-hit complete game shutout to along with 10 strikeouts. The righty notched the victory and is now 4-2 on the season. Kansas City RF Dalton Wheat led the way offensively going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. T-Bones DH Anthony Gallas had a double and scored a run while C Tyler Moore drove in the other run of the contest. Kansas City tallied single runs in the second and fifth innings.

Fargo-Moorhead 5, Gary SouthShore 4 – Box

Right fielder Keury De La Cruz launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give Fargo-Moorhead a 5-3 lead and that proved to be the difference in the game as the RedHawks beat Gary SouthShore, 5-4.  Fargo-Moorhead 2B Ryan Pineda and DH K.D. Kang had a combined five hits, including two home runs, while leadoff hitter Kes Carter collected a pair of hits and scored a run. RedHawks starter Will Solomon tossed a complete game en route to notching his fourth win of the season. Solomon allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Joplin 7, Texas 1 – Box

The Joplin Blasters scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead and they would roll on from there to a 7-1 victory over the Texas AirHogs. Joplin had 12 hits in the contest and was led by 3B Brandon Tierney who went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and three RBI. Blasters 1B Geraldo Valentin added two hits, two runs and a RBI with LF Matthew Martinez launching a home run and driving in two runs. Joplin hurler Mario Morales earned his first win with the team as he allowed an earned run on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched. For Texas in the losing effort, 2B Brian Bistagne had a 2-for-4 night and tallied a run.

Winnipeg 8, Wichita 7 – Box

Winnipeg jumped out in front 5-2 after two innings of play and would have to stop a late Wichita rally to take home an 8-7 victory. Seven of the nine batters in the Goldeyes lineup collected at least a hit with CF Reggie Abercrombie leading the way going 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Winnipeg leadoff hitter Maikol Gonzalez had a hit in three at-bats along with two runs and two walks while 1B Jacob Rogers drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 game. Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl tossed five innings and picked up his eighth win. Carl gave up three earned runs on seven hits and fanned eight batters. Third baseman T.J. Mittelstaedt went 3-for-5 with two runs in the loss for Wichita.

St. Paul 6, Sioux Falls 3 – Box

The St. Paul Saints rolled out to an early 3-0 advantage and cruised to a 6-3 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries. Saints 3B Nate Hanson continued to stay red hot at the plate as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI. In his last two games, Hanson has collected seven hits, two of which were home runs, scored three runs and drove in 10. St. Paul RF Breland Almadova and CF Alonzo Harris each scored two runs in the contest with Almadova chipping in with two hits. St. Paul starting pitcher Robert Coe improved his mark to 9-2 on the season with the win. Coe allowed two earned runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
