MAZZOLA'S HR HIGHLIGHTS INTERLEAGUE WIN

July 17

Box Scores

Winnipeg 7, Trois-Rivieres 5

Josh Mazzola’s (pictured) three-run homer was part of a big offensive inning for Winnipeg. The Goldeyes scored five runs in the third inning and held on to beat the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, 7-5.

The third inning also featured an RBI double by Ray Sadler and a run-scoring single by Ryan Scoma that helped put Winnipeg on top, 6-1. Trois-Rivieres gradually chipped away at the Winnipeg lead. The Aigles scored two runs in the fifth, then made the score 6-4 with a seventh-inning solo homer by Jon Smith. But, Winnipeg scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth and the Aigles’ rally in their half of the inning fell short.

Lincoln 2, Gary SouthShore 1

Curt Smith’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth was the difference for Lincoln in a 2-1 win over Gary SouthShore. Smith came to the plate with two outs and the score tied, 1-1. With David Espinosa on first and Jeff Squier pinch-running on second, Smith delivered the game-deciding hit. Squier came home with the go-ahead run and RJ Rodriguez shut the RailCats down in the ninth for his 21st save of the season.

St. Paul 11, Laredo 2

Six Saints hitters turned in multi-hit games, as St. Paul defeated Laredo, 11-2. Dan Kaczrowski led the offense with a 4-for-5 performance and three RBI. But Kaczrowski was not the only productive Saints bat. Each of the first six hitters in St. Paul’s order drove in a run and four different Saints scored multiple runs. Among those hitters were Jose Hernandez and Dwight Childs, who hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth. Hernandez finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Childs was also 2-for-5 with three runs scored and one run driven in.

Kansas City 5, Grand Prairie 3

Grand Prairie put the tying run on base in the ninth, but could not battle all the way back. Chad Robinson struck out Brian Myrow with runners on first and second to seal a 5-3 win for the T-Bones.

Kansas City scored three runs in the third inning to take an initial lead. Devin Goodwin singled to score Kennard Jones. One batter later, Matt Padgett hit a two-run home run. Padgett’s 17th home run of the year, his second long ball in as many games, gave the T-Bones a 3-0 lead.

The AirHogs pulled closer with two-runs in the fourth, but a pair of errors gave Kansas City insurance runs in the fifth and seventh. That provided enough distance for the T-Bones, as Grand Prairie never drew even.

Fargo-Moorhead 8, Sioux Falls 7

Fargo-Moorhead used two big innings to beat Sioux Falls, 8-7. The RedHawks took their first lead with a five-run third inning. C.J. Retherford and Buddy Sosnoskie hit RBI singles and the RedHawks took advantage of a pair of errors in the frame.

After Sioux Falls pulled within one run in the top of the seventh, the RedHawks answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. The Canaries rallied for two runs in the eighth and nearly tied the game in the ninth, but left the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first when Danny Gutierrez induced a game-ending line out to shortstop.

El Paso vs. Amarillo (Postponed)

Both the suspended game and the regularly scheduled seven-inning contest between the El Paso Diablos and the Amarillo Sox were postponed due to rain. As a result, the teams will complete the suspended game in El Paso on August 8, beginning at 5 p.m. The teams will then play a seven-inning game afterwards. Amarillo and El Paso will also play doubleheaders on August 9 and 10 to complete both the postponed games from this week in Amarillo and the regularly scheduled series in El Paso.
